VOICES FROM JAPAN AND BASEL – BACH MEETS BUDDHA
This extraordinary concert brings together the spiritual traditions of Japan and Europe.
Sacred music from East and West meets on one stage, creating a moving dialogue that
transcends cultural and religious boundaries.
Experience the fascinating world of Japanese temple culture through Goeika – Buddhist
hymns –, solemn rituals performed by Shingon monks, traditional ceremonial attire, and
the powerful sounds of Japanese taiko drums. Rarely heard outside Japan, this unique
musical tradition offers a profound insight into the spiritual heritage of Japanese
Buddhism.
In contrast and harmony, the beauty of European sacred music is represented by a
motet by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by the Swiss choir pourChœur.
A special highlight of the evening is UNITY, a work by Yury Revich inspired by the
musical traditions of both Japan and Europe. The composition celebrates the power of
music to connect people across cultures, religions, and traditions.
Enjoy this unique encounter and an unforgettable musical and visual experience.
This concert is presented with the kind support of the Embassy of Japan in Switzerland.
